What is here

In this site, you can learn about the history of the bells and ringing in the village, what we ringers are up to now, and how we are members of the Mere Branch of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers.

Recent News

Well done Vikki for ringing her first quarter peal on a working bell.   Being made to start with a series of having to make the bob four times, (nothing like being thrown in the deep end!), she rang a steady quarter.   Thank you to the rest of the band for help given along the way.  Vikki is the youngest person recorded to ring inside to a quarter at this tower, having already become the youngest quarter pealer with her first a year ago.

Congratulations to Abbey who rang the tenor to a quarter of Reverse Canterbury Doubles in our January quarter and to her sister Kelly, who rang this method for only the second time inside.  The quarter was dedicated to Frosty, Abbey's cat who had died in the week.   Abbey is the youngest person to have rung the tenor to a quarter here.

At the AGM nothing changed in the way of officers, but we covered in some detail how best to teach and to learn.   We shall set up personal plans so we all have targets and can see ourselves make progress.   We planned our hosting of the branch barbecue on 28 June, of the AGM on 29 November and our outing in August.

Godfrey Kanaar , who had been, at various times, Captain, Ringing Master and Steeplekeeper, died in December.   He was a character and was devoted to this tower until he moved away to Reading.   An appreciation appears in the February / March issue of the Donhead Digest.

We meet on Wednesday evenings and aim firstly to enjoy ourselves, to ring and to learn new things, to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Our ages range from teenagers to pensioners.
